The design principles of traditional Japanese and Chicago architecture have quite a bit in common: fierce attention to detail, thoughtful consideration of a project’s surroundings, respect for old-world craftsmanship and historic materials… the list goes on! Suffice it to say, when plans were announced for the 12-story Nobu Hotel, we knew we had to get involved.
After a few starts and stops, we were pleased to be able to work alongside the architects on the structure’s unique masonry façade. Given the association with anchor tenant Nobu Restaurants — a Japanese eatery known for their signature miso-marinated black cod — it was only fitting that we find an extremely special black brick! This two-color custom blend from Summit Brick features one matte and one iridescent shade, giving the building a slight shimmer in direct sunlight. In addition to modular face brick, we provided matching lipped brick and black mortar from Spec Mix.
Industrial-inspired massing and classic brickwork help the new construction blend seamlessly into the landmarked historic district around it, while the contemporary color choice hints at its ultra-modern interior.
In the last decade, we’ve completed over 20 projects in the area, with even more on the way. Transformation is still afoot in Fulton Market, though it seems bricks are here to stay!
