Painted brick is all the rage, but as we’ve said many times — it’s important to tackle it correctly so as to not damage your masonry! The two locations of Mexican restaurant Ancho & Agave we worked on are the perfect example of that painted look without any damaging side effects.
We sold a classic red utility brick from our existing yard stock for use on the exterior of both restaurants. We created numerous whitewashed mockup panels for eventual approval by the design team. Once coated in breathable, opaque layers of masonry stain from Permatint, you’d never know the original color of the affordable brick underneath! The white surface formed a perfect blank canvas, which was then painted with a subtle, ultra-cool mural.
For the interior of the eateries, we supplied thin brick in “Chicago Common” color from McNear. Heavily applied and smeared mortar gives the walls a rustic, industrial look perfect for the décor of these snazzy cantinas. If you plan to alter the color of your masonry, remember to look for permeable, water-based paints, limewash solutions, or mineral stains. Several years on, these taco joints are still looking fresh!
