Chicago neighborhoods are filled to the brim with hidden gems of 1920s architecture — this one, a sprawling courtyard building in West Ridge known as “Park Castle,” might be one of the best! Built in 1925 and designed by architect James Denson, the complex features lavish brickwork, castle-like turrets, lush landscaping, and sweeping views overlooking Indian Boundary Park.
When it came time to make a series of repairs to the distinctive crenellations of this historic structure, the property management company salvaged as much original brick as possible before seeking out a custom blend of replacement bricks for infill where needed. We provided a three-color mix of vertical scratch Summit Brick in “Misty Grey,” “Medium Buff,” and “Light Buff,” as well as a number of special shapes for some of the unique angles.
The fun of new construction projects is being able to show off a flashy new addition to our city’s streetscapes… restoration projects like this one are best when they’re almost impossible to notice! All the same, it’s a delight to know we played a small role in helping preserve an architectural treasure for future generations. Pro tip: if you ever get a chance to tour the inside… ask to see the swimming pool and its drool-worthy tile!
